Column mean dry mole fractions XCO2 from biospheric and anthropogenic fluxes over Europe. During daytime, CO2 is taken up by plants through photosynthesis (blue). At night the biosphere respires CO2 back to the atmosphere (red). Hourly biospheric CO2 fluxes are based on the Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM) kindly provided by MPI Jena. Hourly anthropogenic emissions are based on a combination of EDGAR v42 and a high-resolution Swiss CO2 emission inventory, and include source-category dependent time functions for diurnal, day-of-week and seasonal variability.
